hiking in the Ounila Valley: on the trail of salt caravans
We begin this tour by visiting Ksar Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on the side of a hill at the top of which was the collective granary, the oldest houses date from the 17th century. An impressive number of films have been shot in this extremely well preserved place, starting with Lawrence of Arabia or more recently Gladiator.
As a result, here we go for 3 days of hiking on the trail of salt caravans, following centuries-old Berber trails between Telouet and Aït Benhaddou (take 4 to 6 hours of walking per day). The hike can also be done in 4 days by taking detours, or going through the mountain rather than the valleys.
Along the way, we cross magnificent fortified ocher villages, built to protect the caravans of goods against the attacks of the looters who once traveled this caravan route that connected the Moroccan south and Marrakech. One of the best known is Anemiter, where the famous watercolorist Jacques Majorelle stayed almost 2 years in his great Kasbah and painted a large number of canvases.
We will end this hike by visiting the salt mine and the Telouet Kasbah of the 19th century. Partly in ruins today, it used to be the residence of the chief of the powerful Glaoui tribe. Some rooms still preserved are absolutely superb, with magnificent mosaics and views of the surrounding valley. But the rest unfortunately falls into ruin.
Trekking 8 days / 7 nights
Col Tichka - Telouet - Ksar Ait ben haddou (Distance 68km).
